About

Who am I and why did I set up HP Reading Tuition, offering reading and writing tuition to the people of West Yorkshire?

I recently moved to Denby Dale in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire from Holmfirth. My youngest daughter has started a university course at St Andrews and my other two daughters have careers and lovely children of their own. My favourite times are when I am with my children and their children. I feel especially lucky to live so near to local countryside, as I love walking and enjoying nature. I also love spending time at home, with my cat Sheldon.

Recently,  I decided to leave the teaching profession. I taught at a school in Deighton Huddersfield for 12 years and loved it there. Prior to my appointment at Deighton, I taught in schools across Huddersfield, including Birkby Infant School for 6 years. Previously, I taught at a school in  Oldham (my hometown). I've always been highly regarded as a teacher and mentor and I enjoyed teaching. However, I started to feel that it was time to move away from schools, but didn't want to give up helping children learn. I love teaching children and I know that  I'm very good at it. So I decided to start offering tuition, as I have tutored before.

It soon became apparent that there is a lot of demand for tutors.  Many children are not where they are expected with reading and writing ability, and more and more parents/carers are seeking the support of a private tutor. I discovered that although I could offer quality tuition in my home, it wasn't the same as having my own classroom.  After a lot of research and soul searching, I decided to set up a classroom of my own, which would be well resourced and dedicated to reading and writing tuition. It's marvelous! I have everything I need close to hand and can provide the same, if not better, quality teaching I provided in school. My teaching is more precise and individualised because I am teaching one subject to a specific need. Parents/carers are able to stay with their children so they feel more confident, and pick up teaching tips. I'm always happy to give advice and support. It's important to me to build a good relationship with both the child and parent/carer so we can work as a team.
